Lights living in the shadow

inside lane would necessarily have to start a conversion look ( tawba, in the technical language of traditional Sufism), ie "a seemingly negative investment will" in the words of Frithjof Schuon. And in the spiritual life, attitude is negative or apophatic in principle before the affirmative act or cataphatic. That expresses precisely the first part of the shahada : "La ilaha il Allah • the" no more reality than the really real, real touchstone of Islamic spirituality and spiritual insight fundamental without which no worth Sufism. This conversion of the gaze, which, of course, knows nothing of categories sociological implies, among other things, modify our usual consideration of reality: the old and outdated it can not serve as a basis for the new.
So, something must revoke entry is the image that we have both our light and our darkness. To put it funnels, which are not blind us to our shortcomings, the darkness, but just the opposite: our strengths and capabilities, that is, what we call symbolic light. In fact, virtues and skills are the main obstacle in the inside lane, because we identify so much with them that keep breaking the surface weaknesses and shortcomings, that is, our shade, and there is an irrevocable law in spirituality which affirms that one only turns what he knows.
What's more, our security, and as precarious beings yearn to feel safe at any cost, depends on our identification with our bright side. However, the light is only part of us, the rest in the shade, do not even want to hear. And the paradox is that there in the shade precisely, resides the light that can make us see things as they are. In that sense, and not another, is that Mawlana Rumi (d. 1273) states that pain is a school life, and not go ahead here is a self-punitive attitude to style 'the worse the better'. Nothing further from the classical Sufism, for example, certain Christian attitudes that glorify the pain as purgative way access to the divine. No, what is being discussed here is very different and at the same time, much simpler, but it costs us to hear. In short, what Rûmî says is that in the inside lane did not progress through your virtues and abilities, but by your own shadow, lights that inhabit it. But the shadow embrace personnel requires great honesty and courage, while no little insight, a relentless lucidity, which, unfortunately, is not for everyone.
